How to send a long video on WhatsApp
WhatsApp has a video limit and a document limit — and which you hit depends on a single tap. Here's how to get any video through, and what each route costs you.
You pick a video, tap send, and WhatsApp tells you it’s too big. The fix depends on how you want it to arrive — as a video that plays in the chat, or as a file the other person downloads.
WhatsApp’s video and document limits
As of October 2026, WhatsApp’s Help Center says the default video size limit depends on your connection:

The document limit was raised from 100 MB to 2 GB in 2022. WhatsApp also notes that media is usually compressed when shared, so what arrives may look worse than your original.
How much video fits?
How many seconds fit depends on the bitrate. Ninja’s WhatsApp preset aims for 16 MB; WhatsApp’s own defaults are larger.

Durations allow 3% for container overhead. A phone’s own 4K recording runs at tens of megabits per second, which is why even a few seconds of it won’t fit. To size another length, work out the bitrate for your target size.
Four ways to send it
1. Compress it to fit (keeps it playable in the chat)
The best option for anything up to a couple of minutes. You want a file well under WhatsApp’s limit, at a resolution the bitrate can fill — 720p at 30 fps or lower (720p is also the resolution WhatsApp’s Help Center gives for faster connections). Squeezing 1080p into a small file just spreads the same bits over more pixels.
In Ninja, choose the WhatsApp share preset. It targets 16 MB and caps the video at 720p and 30 fps. That’s well under the 64 MB and 100 MB defaults WhatsApp lists. The estimate shows the expected size before you commit, and if the result doesn’t hit the target, nothing is overwritten.
2. Send it as a document (keeps full quality)
In the chat, tap the attach icon, choose Document, and pick the video from your files. WhatsApp sends the file untouched, up to 2 GB.
The trade-off: it arrives as a file rather than a video in the chat. The recipient downloads the whole thing before watching, which matters on mobile data — a 1 GB file is 1 GB of their allowance.
3. Split it into parts
For a long video that has to play in the chat, cut it into pieces that each fit. With a trim tool, a long talk becomes several shorter clips; at a comfortable 1.5 Mbps, one minute is about 11 MB, so each part stays well under the default limit. In Ninja, use Trim for each part, then compress each with the WhatsApp preset.
4. Share a link instead
